You're spot on at noticing that it doesn't have that punch or growl that's often needed to be upfront, but is totally classy with ambient style pads and soft basses/leads. Most posts I read these days on the Poly 800 is from people comparing it to the usual suspects from the 80's and in general terms it really can't complete, but where it fails at mimicking anything the others all do and forget EDM, it really shines with that synthetic dark early 80's spooky horror vibe. I did PM you, but to add to your post I'm pleased you're finding something special with this crappy old Korg
#Korg poly 800 tape Patch
But since you seem psyched, I'm going to PM you the patch from 1:18 so you can manually enter it into your mkII. Unfortunately I don't think the patches will work on the mkII :( Just the regular poly 800. And since it has stereo chorus, I'll reach for it over my Minilogue too. That's a big reason that I'll reach for it over my prophet 6.īut it has so much character to it too, the filter is so squeaky, and just happens to sound great in a mix.

Lots of the patches actually just use a single-oscillator so you can play huge jazzy chords. It's also great to have 8 notes of polyphony. There are so many different sounds you can make by just stacking square waves in different ways.for example you can use oscillator 1 to have a little saw wave on top, skip an octave, give yourself a square wave sub oscillator, and then fill in the root note with with oscillator 2.which can be detuned from oscillator 1! I don't know of any other 2-oscillator synth that can do that. I didn't use that in the patch pack, but it's really cool and weird.īut what I really love about it is the wonky oscillator section. It almost sounds like a ring modulator or even FM when I play more than one note at a time. When it's turned all the way down it sounds normal, but then when it's turned up it makes this crazy distortion.but it doesn't get louder.
#Korg poly 800 tape mod
I brought it home and loaded up the factory patches, and it works perfectly! It has the Moog Slayer mod on it and some other mod that I've never seen before, it's just a random knob in the DEG1 section.

I found mine on craigslist for $100 a year or two ago, it's internal batteries had died and wouldn't make a sound, so the owner thought it was broken. I would love to load up some of your sounds ?Thank you so much for the support!! I just wish it were built to last, I lie awake each night worrying if my 800 will still switch on the next day It was my first poly and I can't do a track these days without considering it. I'm obsessed with this silly little synth. What's your connection with the Poly 800 ? I guess you have some affinity with it to take time putting together a nice patch bank ! Lovely dark and interesting sounds, keeping that cutoff down is hard to do on the 800 so it was great to listen to your demo and hear something different from the sort of thing I normally programme ,I've owned Poly's since they were released, I currently have a Mk11 un-modded Idspispopd you did an amazing job, thank you, no really I mean that !!!! anyone who devotes time to this quirky little synth in 2018 is right with me
